Every day is a warfare. One that we are all a part of. Being a teacher and parent I often entertain the question of why it’s so hard for some to do what is asked of them. Why is it so hard to be obedient?
Then this morning, as I’m running some not so nice thoughts through in my head of what I would like to say to someone. The Lord gently nudges me and lets me know that I shouldn’t say those things. “But….what about this or that?” and he simply says to just be obedient and hold my tongue. To put others above myself regardless of what I think I deserve.
It’s not about me!
The every day battle we all seem to struggle with is selfishness. We come into this world with an innate sense of wanting everything to be about us. We can see it in our children when they play and interact with others. It’s all about them. Yes, we grow up and learn how to share and to put others first, but it’s not always easy.
When others don’t treat us with the respect we think we deserve we have a choice. We can be obedient to what the Word says or we can let it be about us. Sometimes I don’t always make the right choice and I end up having to make mends of the mess I’ve gotten myself into. It’s embarrassing and it puts into focus that it’s not all about me!
Obeying is better than saying, “I’m sorry.”
For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps. He never sinned, nor ever deceived anyone. He did not retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered. He left his case in the hands of God. 1 Peter 2:21-23 NLT
So think clearly and exercise self-control. Look forward to the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. 1 Peter 1:13-14 NLT
When we choose to follow his Word our reward is great!
Oh, that you had listened to my commands! Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea. Isaiah 48:18 NLT
And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. But those who obey God’s words truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did. 1 John 2:3-6 NLT
Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. Romans 8:5-6 NLT
If you listen to these commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you today, and if you carefully obey them, the Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you will always be on top and never at the bottom. Romans 28:13 NLT
We are going to continue to have these struggles, however, it gets easier as you meditate on his Word and knowing that a moment of silence and a bit of self-control now will bring an abundance of blessings for just simply obeying.
Who will you let win these battles?
